It is believed that Khafre’s workers shaped the stone into the lion and gave it their king’s face over 4,500 years ago. Continue to Memphis and see a colossal statue of Ramses II and a great alabaster Sphinx. Continue to nearby Sakkara, best known for the The Step Pyramid of Zoser I, the oldest known of Egypt’s 97 pyramids. (B)

In the morning transfer to Cairo airport. On arrival in Luxor transfer to pier for embarkation. Enjoy lunch on board. Travel along an avenue of ramheaded sphinxes, extending for about two miles, which link Luxor Temple with the Karnak Temple. Tour the West Bank including visits to the Valley of the Kings housing many of the tombs of pharaohs from the New Kingdom. Continue to Queen Hatshepsut’s Temple, the only woman pharaoh to reign in ancient Egypt, followed by stop near Colossi of Memnon - two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III. Visit the legendary Philae, the sacred monuments built for the cult of Isis and Osiris and the modern High Dam of Aswan. It was an engineering miracle when it was built in the 1960s. It contains 18 times the material used in the Great Pyramid of Cheops. Afternoon sail by traditional felucca boat around Kitchener’s island and Agha Khan Mausoleum. (B, L, D)
